What’s the Difference Between a Ghostwriter and a Copywriter?
Someone sent me this question today: What’s the difference between a ghostwriter and a copywriter? To be honest, it gets used interchangeably these days, so you’re going to have to ask the client what kind of work exactly they’re seeking. Technically, I’ve always considered it like this:
Ghostwriting is any type of writing that you do where the client retains copyright and gets to use their name (not yours – hence the “ghost” part). It could include articles, eBooks, blog posts, email autoresponders, reports, guides, etc.
Copywriting is sales “copy.” But now many marketers say copywriting to convey the need for an eBook, or articles, etc. They don’t associate copywriting with just sales copy.
So you have to say something like this to your clients:
“You’re looking for a copywriter, and I wanted to clarify, since many marketers use that word with ghostwriter interchangeably, and see what kind of writing you were seeking – sales copy or other content?”
Hope this helps!
